The Nanchang CJ-6A was a tandem military trainer aircraft produced from 1962 until 1965 and was based on the Nanchang Aircraft Factory's CJ-5, a license built Yakovlev Yak-18, a 1945 WWII Russian design. The CJ-5 was found to be unsuitable for training jet pilots and the design was modified by the addition of retracting undercarriage, increased dihedral, redesigned tail and the more powerful Quzhou Huosai HS6A engine as the Nanchang CJ-6A. A total in excess of 1,500 CJ-6As were produced in just two years, production ceasing in 1965. A CJ-6B version was also produced which incorporated offensive armament between 1964 and 1966.
