The Grob Tutor T1 is manufactured by GROB Aerospace, a German company known for it's expertise with composite materials and high performance gliders, consequently the Tutor has many of the flight characteristics normally associated with gliders. The Grob Tutor T1 began to replace the Royal Air Force's fleet of Bulldog primary training aircraft in 1999, ninety aircraft are currently used by the RAF's University Air Squadrons and Air Experience Flights, the aircraft are owned and maintained by Bombardier, a private contactor under the MOD's Private Finance Initiative (PFI) and consequently all the aircraft carry civilian registrations.
