Developed before WW1 as a fighter and bomber the Avro 504 was found to be already obsolete after only a few month of operation, re-designated as a trainer. The Avro 504 proved to be a truly excellent training aircraft, over 8,000 were eventually produced and served as a basic trainer until the final version, the Avro 504N, was replaced by the RAF with the new Avro Tutor in 1933.
