The Curtiss O-52 Owl was designed in the late 1930's for the United States Army Air Corps as an observation aircraft, 203 aircraft were produced, all but 26 which were sent to the USSR were supplied to the USAAC and became operational in 1940, by the time the USA Entered WW2 in 1942 they had been deemed to have inadequate performance for a war time reconnaissance role and were re-designated for courier duties within the US only.
