The Saab Gripen JAS 39 is a jet fighter designed to operate from runways as short as 800m to meet Sweden's war defence strategy of utilising it's roads as emergency fighter runways. The Saab Gripen JAS 39 jet fighter is primarily operated by the Swedish Air Force but is also in service with the air-forces of Czechoslovakia, Hungary and South Africa with the UK's Empire Test Pilots' School also using the aircraft as a trainer.
