North American F-100 Super Sabre Jet Fighter Plane

The F-100 Super-Sabre nicknamed "the Hun" was a swept wing super-sonic fighter which was designed in the 1950's as a replacement for the existing subsonic F-86 Sabre and served with the USAF as it's first supersonic in level flight fighter from September 1954 to 1961 when the aircraft was withdrawn following numerous handling and reliability problems, over 500 F-100D's were eventually lost in accidents mainly due to the swept wing design being optimised for high speed, in consequence the Super Sabre had a high stall speed and stalls happened so often when landing they called the "Sabre Dance" by it's pilots. The increase in cold-war tension with the building of the Berlin Wall resulted in the F-100 Super-Sabre being reinstated as a stop-gap measure after only a few months retirement and they remained in service until 1971, later aircraft were supplied as fighter-bombers with nuclear bomb capability, after retirement from the USAF the F-100 Super Sabre equipped the Air National Guard until mid 1979.

It is interesting to note that the F-100 Super-Sabre was the chosen mount of the USAF's "Thunderbirds" display team for many years and also served with the air forces of Taiwan, Denmark, France and Turkey.
