The Ling-Temco-Vought A-7E Corsair II was based on the supersonic Chance Vought F-8 Crusader fighter, it was designed to be a subsonic subsonic light attack aircraft for the USAF to replace the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and entered service in early 1967. The Corsair II design was modified and replaced many of the Air National Guards older aircraft including their Republic F-105 Thunderchief, North American F-100 Super Sabre and Douglas A-1 Skyraider aircraft.
